Just Immigration
Our immigration system has been a moral, economic, and humanitarian disaster. Taxpayer dollars are funding private prisons detaining children, border agents shooting refugees fleeing violence, and ICE snatching parents from their homes in the middle of the night. We are spending roughly $8 billion on ICE and $14 billion on the CBP, but that has not stemmed the number of undocumented people in our country; it has only exacerbated their abuse.
Our immigration system must be rooted in compassion, care, and empathy.
We assert that undocumented immigrants – like all people – deserve a dignified existence. We also recognize that our government has contributed to political instability, economic inequality, and labor exploitation abroad. We must eliminate the pushes of mass migration by supporting the equitable growth of developing economies and by advancing the rights of international labor.
Our plan for a humane immigration policy:
Abolish ICE and Defund CBP (separate immigration policy from DHS and develop it outside of terrorism framework)
Grant legal status to all undocumented immigrants already living and working in the United States with immediate pathway to citizenship
Demilitarize the border and dismantle the border wall
End all forms of family separation and detention of asylum seekers at the border
Enforce and expand the rights of all workers to form unions and report labor violations
Enact measures to allow undocumented immigrants to obtain drivers licenses
Create an independent immigration court separate from the Justice Department
Increase the number of H-1B visas issued
Fund local programs in the Americas and Caribbean that help combat corruption, violence, and poverty
