Women’s Rights
While much has been achieved by women and allies fighting for equal protection under the law, freedom from violence, and access to employment, women’s rights are continuously under attack. Women still do not earn equal pay for equal work, and single women and their children constitute the largest group of impoverished people in the United States. The #MeToo movement demonstrated – in the national spotlight – how pervasive sexual harassment and violence towards women is. We have also witnessed the scale to which reproductive rights are being rolled back; there have been over 50 laws introduced in state legislatures this year banning most or all abortions. Restricting access to abortions, contraceptives and sexual education disproportionately affects low-income women of color, who are more likely to experience unintended pregnancies. Lastly, tens of thousands of women are sex trafficked each year in the US. The abusive treatment of women is systemic, and this platform aims to enact policies that continue the fight for women’s justice and dismantle systems of patriarchy.
Our Plan:
Support the passage of the Paycheck Fairness Act for Equal Pay for Equal Work
Support the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment, granting equal legal rights regardless of gender
Protect the right and access to a safe, unrestricted abortion for all women, trans men, and non-binary people
Support the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would protect women in accessing abortion care where states have tried to limit it
Guarantee equal access and reproductive justice as part of Medicare for All
Support Title X family planning funding and the expansion of family planning centers and will fight against efforts to defund such centers
Support publicly funded sexual and reproductive education
Support access to free birth control
Repeal the Hyde Amendment
Repeal the Global Gag Rule
Supports access to free sanitary products
Support six months of paid family leave
Support federal funded research that would address the high infant mortality rate of women of color
Support the passage of the BE HEARD Act (Bringing an End to Harassment by Enhancing Accountability in the Workplace Act)
Support the passage of the Sexual Assault Survivors Bill of Rights at the federal level
Reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act
